I stopped by my parent’s house last night and decided to borrow one of my dad’s old fire helmets to practice some lighting on. I had been thinking about doing this for a while and after pulling the strobes out the other night, I was motivated to do some more work. This is actually a practice session for another shoot I’ll do later with his current helmet and a better background, but I’m happy with the results for a quick setup and shoot.
I come from a long line of firefighters in my family – my dad, my grandpa, 2 great uncles and great grandfather. I always admired the lifestyle and dedication of firefighters because of that and if I weren’t headed in the direction I am going with photography and cinematography, I would have chosen that path as well. When I started heading in a different direction, I felt a sense of guilt for not continuing the legacy. This wasn’t pressure from anyone or anything, but luckily I also have an extremely supportive family whom recognize my passion and skills and help me in any way that they can. So, while I may not continue the tradition, I will continue to support, appreciate and admire all that they do and have done.
